Single Sheets

On the following pages Siegfried Haberer shows a number of print graphics produced from 1975 to 1989. Even though the graphics should not be understood as a distinct series in the sense of Oiseaux and Le Jour de l'Âme, they are assembled here for the similarity of the motifs mainly used. Beyond the female nude, which can be determined at a glance as the very subject of the sheets concerned, the human eye and the bird are the most important motifs to be encountered here in any kind of variation. Their rich and complex symbolism in the history of art arose from a pictorial tradition maybe as old as mankind itself and gained special interest at least among the surrealists of the 1920's and 1930's. In the sheets shown on the following pages the artist refers to the latter tradition. And besides, Haberer's print graphics might also be seen as literary and typographic experiments, whose charm derives from the subtle correspondence of image and text.
